Money Makes The World Go 'Round:

You know how sometimes there's something that you want to talk or write about, but you're now really sure how to go about it. Then you think about a clever way of putting it instead of just ranting away, but then the more you think about it the more it just depresses you? Well, at the bloggers get together a month ago we talked about people, who had Paypal links on their sites and I complained that I couldn't understand why people would expect others to pay them to blog. I've actually visited blogs, where the writer has complained, because people didn't donate enough. The mere fact that anyone has even given a dollar surprises me, so I find demands for more money incredible. And later when the savekaryn.com site appeared I just dismissed it and thought it was naive of her to think that anyone would want to help her pay off her debts. So this kind of begging online has been a pet peeve of mine (although I hate that expression) for a while, but now it has turned into full on pissed-off-ness. Turns out this Karyn person has a really well paid job, but has blown all her money on Gucci bags and Louis Vuitton outfits. And instead of just putting away money to pay off her debts she created a site and begged for it. I'm not the type of person who is easily offended, but something about this truly annoys me. Maybe it's because I'm totally broke and don't make nearly as much money as her. I have more debts than her and I don't spend what little money I have on designer bags.

Obviously, everyone is entitled to spend their money which ever way they want to, but why you would what to send money to some idiot, who got herself in debt by buying clothes is beyond me. If you want to give money away there are literaly a million charities that are more worthy than ridding this airhead of her debts. The reason I finally had to vent about this is that according to a Salon article I found today this Karyn person has now been offered both a book deal and a movie contract. I don't even have the words to describe how stupid this is. So now she'll write a book about squandering money and begging online and then turn it into a movie? What's up with that?

I don't have any real points with this other than I find it incrediblely presumptuous that people think that others will give them money just because they have a website and incredibly strange that so many seem to want to donate. Maybe it's sour grapes or something I don't know. Either way I've been annoyed by this for a while and for some reason felt like getting it off my chest.

People are stupid, self-absorbed and narrow minded. God made a mistake letting a few o' them get away with that ol' flood thing a few years back.

However, personally, I still haven't found a legal loophole that allows me to get rid of a whole bunch of them with heavy artillery in a supermarket, so there's really nothing we can do about it right now.

This is a society that rewards mob values such as the search for money, power and the sickening ability to use the possession of a 'family' as some sort of holy grail entitling the bearer to some sorta moral ascendency. Truth, as always, is written by he or she with the most friends, and drafted so that the dumb folks that we fail inexplicably to ignore can understand.

And, yeah, it's always been this way.

As I said, people are stupid. And they're 'the most advanced creatures on the planet' too. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA (splutter)...

Just a thought:
I often find that the most interesting blogs are written by people with little money and too much time on their hands.
Wouldn't paying them for blogging about financial troubles most likely end their troubles and lead to boring blogs?

I guess broke people have more woes and therefore have more to write about. But in the case of Karyn my bet is that she'll keep having money problems as long as people keep sending her money. I might sound all parental here, but how is she ever going to learn to budget and save money, when people are rewarding her for her frivolous spending?

Can't really blame her for chancing her arm. You'd have to think the people who actually donated money to her were the really stupid ones.

True, but there's just something about begging when you don't have to which offends me. She isn't unemployed and she isn't homeless, so she should be able to figure out things for herself.
But I guess people will stoop to anything to get their hands on some free money.

It's also sad, because she'd probably end up being a more accesible beggar for some too. People get a little scared when someone who's really in need approaches them, because they're scared to empathise with the kind of pain they're in and what they're forced to do to get themselves through the day.

But, hey, we've all leant a friend a few bucks for a shirt or something, haven't we? It sounds to me, that, just like in life, even in begging, you've got a better chance of success if you're pretty and perky, (and not actually in need cos that would make folks uncomfortable)

I agree with you John. She needs to learn how to resolve her money issues by herself, instead of hoping for a bail-out, otherwise she'll always have this problem.

It helps that she's young and blonde.

How is Karyn going to learn from her mistakes if other people are paying them off for her? I found myself in credit card debt after college and I'm still paying it off - and am going through a credit counseling program. I have found a much better "cyber begging" website to support

ok i guess i don't know how to use that html tag :p

Something that's always bothered me...

Domain names cost money. As does web space. And yet many of these cyber beggars purchase domain names and web space to beg! If they are truly in need, wouldn't this money be better spent elsewhere?

I run such a site, but I haven't payed for anything in order to build it. The domain name is free (Dot.tk), as is the web space (Geocities.com). My internet access is even free, though my college!

Anyone who is truly in need shouldn't be able to afford such luxuries. I can't.

But since I need the money, and the website is free and easy, I figured - why not? It can't hurt anything. And if I'm lucky, it just might help a bit.
