Talkin' Seattle Grunge Rock Blues:
I watched The Filth & The Fury and it was fairly horrible. I really liked The Sex Pistols, when I was 16 and I’ve always admired their “We don’t give a toss” attitude. But since I saw them on their reunion tour in 1996, where they left the stage after fifteen minutes, because they got pelted with bottles, I’ve lost pretty much all respect for them and especially Johnny Rotten. He’s a self-indulgent and pompous guy, who keeps going on about stuff that happened 25 years ago. Supposedly, this movie shows the real Sex Pistols, which hasn’t been shown in previous documentaries about the band. Honestly, the only difference I could find was that they kept slagging Malcolm McLaren of without giving him a chance to retort. Other than that it was the same stories that we’ve heard a million times before. So that was a downer. The only thing that fascinated me was the relationship between Nancy and the band. Apparently, she was the Courtney Love of the time. I'm a huge fan of grunge and I still buy STP records. John, I notice you had the delicacy to sidestep the Soundgarden comment. But just for you Crimson, there are reasons that people have given up on Soundgarden, I mean have you actually tried listening to their new stuff? Oooph! Posted by: Kieran on July 29, 2002 05:46 AMOh, it wasn't meant as a sidestep at all. I thought Down on the Up Side was a great album and there are some good songs on Cornell's solo album. I'm not so sure about the stuff he did with Rage, but some of the songs I've heard were okay. Posted by: John Fogde on July 29, 2002 06:02 AMGotta say that I wasn't much impressed with the Civilian (Cornell/Rage) stuff either, but aint heard it all yet. Oh, and the European Grunge Appreciation comment wasn't so much a valid point, more a ranting reaction to having worked for seven hours in a cinema playing UK garage and the Same Darn Pop Idol Record over and over... that's funny, after nearly ten years of never thinking about it -- and generally forgetting about my youthful love for 'grunge' -- I ordered superunknown for £6 on saturday from 101cd.com (not an advert, just something I thought might be of interest!). £6 is a real bargain for 73 minutes of awesome rock. Obviously, the singles are great, but songs like My Wave and 4th of July are definitely standouts as well. Posted by: John Fogde on July 30, 2002 09:46 AM4th of july is one of my favourites as is like suicide and the day i tried to live (I can't remember if that was a single). Finding someone else in Europe who appreciates Soundgarden (or Stone Temple Pilots, or indeed any vaguely grunge band who ain't called Nirvana) is just about as impossible as...well...finding Europeans to join an American Football Fantasy League. Hmmm....
Posted by: Crimson Cow on July 28, 2002 11:05 AMCheck out 'Live Through This' by Everett True. It's a real interesting journey through the grunge years from start (no, not Nevermind) to limping, half-eaten zombified finish (or thereabouts)...in book form. Figures...
