Venus and Serena Understand:
I finally got around to making my thesis on weblogs available online, so if you're interested (and you know Danish) you can download it here. Speaking of weblogs the funniest thing I've read this week is this quote from Well Hung At Dawn: "We see on the news that there's an al Quaeda Web site. How the hell is that not shut down? What the fuck is it, www.alquaeda.org? At first we were afraid to log on, but we couldn't resist a glimpse at Dr. Al-Zawahari's blog: Reading WHAD is always like trying to figure out a bunch of private jokes, but when you do get them it's pretty funny. I like this article from The New York Times about those pesky Best Records... Ever lists. I think the main reason I like it is the claim that nobody actually listens to the top twenty records on those lists because they're all from the 60s and somehow it has just been decided that they're classics and by default better than records from the 80s and 90s. It's nice to see that Duran Duran will get another Lifetime Achievement Award. Now if they'd only play a show here and maybe put out a new album in my lifetime then things would be even nicer. This article on the Vocaloid software, which will most likely replace backup singers in a few years is one of the most depressing things I've read in a while. I have this thing were once in a while I'll buy a record, listen to it for a bit and then just forget about it. Then one day I'll hear it in a café, a club or a concert venue and then realize how great a record it is and rush home and listen to it over and over again. That just happened again with the new Super Furry Animals record, which I wasn't too impressed by at first. But they played it last week as we were in line to get our coats after the Grandaddy show, and since then I've listened to it every day. Weird, innit? Posted by John Fogde at 21:57

Can't Afford To Be Just One In A Flock:
I finally got around to sign up for the Blogforum conference next week, so I'll be going to Copenhagen Thursday and I'll stick around for a couple of days. I was planning on going to the Kings of Leon show, but it's sold out. So I'll have to make some calls and see if I can work something out. Otherwise I'll just have to do something else. My parents gave me a digital camera this week as a graduation present, which I thought was extremely nice of them. I haven't had a chance to use it yet, but from now on I'll start taking pictures at the concerts I go to and obviously I'll post them here, so look out for weird out-off-focus pictures appearing here on an irregular basis. Are you a budding writer and maybe even a fan of Douglas Coupland? Then check out this competition, where you can win £1000 if you write the best story inspired by one of the four photos chosen by Coupland himself. Is it irony or just sad if you dose off during Insomnia? This is the best Duran Duran article I've read in a long time. Some of the quotes are really funny and it's always fun to hear the old Boy George/John Taylor anecdotes. I didn't realize Nick Denton had started a porn blog. Now he's looking for people who can blog about travels and furniture, which I assume is for new weblogs for his empire. He's totally my hero. Speaking of blogs - The Guardian has an article on music blogs, which ends like this: "But this unregulated zone [music weblogs] contains fantastic, stimulating and piercingly acute writing. Savour the moment before its protagonists have to find proper jobs". Hopefully, I can turn my work on my Danish music weblog into a paying job, so that doesn't happen to me. Like most bloggers I've been listening to the new The Shins record like crazy and I'm so into it. But as usual I only listen sporadically to the lyrics, so after humming Santa's back at the drawing board over and over again I decided to check what the hell that meant and obviously the real lyrics say Sends us back to the drawing board (I like my version better even though it doesn't make sense with the rest of the lyrics). My other favourite line right now is ‘Stop!’ Said the puppy/When I met him at The Zebra Cross from the SFA single Golden Retriever and the reason I like it is because they pronounce it Zeb-ra instead of Zeee-bra. God is in the details you know. I went and saw Grandaddy Monday night and it was really good. The first half of the show was a bit uneven, but when they finally played some stuff of Sophtware Slump the show really took off (for some reason they only played three songs of that record). I reviewed it for Frekvens, so it's in Danish, but you can go there and check out some pictures from the show. And you can see large versions of the ones from the article here. Weirdest thing to happen so far this week? Bartending the Senior Citizen of the Year Award thing yesterday. I only have five working days left and then I'll be a free man. Broke, but free nonetheless. Posted by John Fogde at 22:04

It's All In Your Head She Said:
I'm almost finished with my assignment in the kitchen I've mentioned earlier. I haven't really written a lot about it, because it's just boring and not really something I want to spend a lot of time thinking about. And it hasn't even been that terrible, so there's no fun in going nuts here about how much I hate it. But there is one thing that annoys me incredibly at work every day and that's this old guy who shows up at the crack of dawn every day and bothers people who are trying to work. The guy must be bored out of his mind to want to show up to an empty community facility every day around 7 and just walk around by himself hoping that there's something he can do or someone he can talk to. Wait just a second - you're not starting to feel sorry for him now, are you? Because I was at first, but after a week I wanted him to piss off and leave us alone. I just wanted him to go home and watch tv or read a book or something instead of being in the way and started annoying conversations. I actually missed some work (without missing it, if you know what I mean) last week, because I didn't feel so hot. So today I have a doctor's appointment to see what's wrong with me (which is why I'm home to write this instead of gutting fish or something). I had surgery about 6-7 years ago and I saw a doctor, when I was in for the draft. But I haven't been to a regular doctor since I fell of my bike, when I was 12, so it's a little weird. Obviously, I'm expecting it to be cancer or at least an ulcer, but maybe it's nothing (but it's probably something). I wanted to go to the doctor Thursday, but they didn't have time, so I had to wait until today. I feel a lot better now than I did a week ago (Friday I was actually well enough to sexually harrassed some poor girl at work), but I figured that since I had made the appointment I might as well go get checked up. And to celebrate that I'll finally get told how many weeks I have to live we'll go see Grandaddy tonight. I've seen them at Roskilde before where they were decent, but I'm really looking forward to seeing them in a club and hearing their new stuff. And I think there'll be a lot of familiar faces there, which will be cool. Posted by John Fogde at 09:35

In This World Even Winter Ain’t What It Seems:
I watched Kill Bill this Saturday and I thought it sucked quite frankly. I guess the production and music was alright, but the script and dialogue was lame and actually boring from time to time. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for senseless violence and overblown choreography, but if there had been a bit of a story or maybe some interesting dialogue I think Tarantino could've won me over fairly easily. But it had nothing and I left feeling annoyed and slightly nauseous. So after that (and in general) I needed a good laugh, so I watched Lewis Black - Unleashed and Dennis Miller - The Raw Feed, which had plenty of laughs. The Black stuff from 1998 is absolutely hilarious even though I had heard some of the bits before on his White Album (like the "If it weren't for my horse" bit) it had me laughing hard. Obviously, you're always a little scared that he might pop an aneurysm during his performance, but that's also a part of the charm. I guess Dennis Miller woke up around 9/11 and decided that he just wasn't conservative enough and now he's probably the most pro-Bush, pro-war, pro-killing everyone in the Middle East comedian ever. But he's still funny even though he's talking out of his ass sometimes. I rounded of the evening by watching Confidence, which was really cool. Everything about it is just cool - the cast, the story, the dialogue, and the way Burns talks to Hoffman. That's the kind of movie Tarantino should be making instead of whackass ninja flicks. Now I'm back home, so I guess I have to get back to normal life. I have to apply for a couple of jobs this week and do some other stuff as well. I've been thinking about some stuff the last couple of days and one them is Simply Red. I'm not a big fan of Simply Red, but sometimes I think Mick Hucknall was right when he said, "If you don't know me by now - you will never never never know me". Know what I mean? Tell Me That You’ll Wait For Me:
I'm off to Copenhagen tomorrow for a housewarming party, which ought to be really good. Other than that I have no real plans for my stay, so I think I'll just hang out the rest of the weekend. Besides, I'm probably going to Copenhagen again later this month for the Blog Forum thing, which sounds pretty interesting. If I get over there I might even get a chance to plug our music weblog a bit, which would be fun to do in a forum of the smartest bloggers this country has to offer. My Warhol domain is being moved, so if you've tried to check out warhol.dk or sent me an email you've probably noticed that they ain't working. I found this surprisingly serious interview with Ricky Gervais, which I think you might enjoy if you liked The Office. And here's an article by Michael Moore on The Boondocks [via Emme], which is a little apropos nothing as the strip has been running for like three years now, but I guess Moore just likes taking shots a White America. My head hurts today, so I called in sick, which means I've spent the day sleeping and when I finally got up all I could do was drink coffee and watch old episodes of The Simpsons. That also means I haven't done any surfing, so I have no idea what's going on in the world today. The MTV Europe Music Awards might be on later, so I guess I'll have to watch that. After all X-Stina is hosting and what could be more funny than that? Chris Rock, Conan O'Brien, or Jack Black hosting the show, you say? Surely, you jest. Posted by John Fogde at 16:21

A Question That You Should Say Yes To:
At work the other day a couple came in to eat and I later learned that they were celebrating their 59. wedding anniversary. How incredible is that? I don't know how long the average couple is married, but it's probably less than 59 months, so 59 years is truly remarkable. The way things are going that won't happen to me, but I'd settle for just living another 59 years. I haven't passed on a lot of links lately, but I found a link at Slatch to a site, where they stream the entire The Stills record, so I've been listening to that a lot lately. I also really dig this picture from a San Francisco bookstore. I found this article about the Roy Lichtenstein exhibit I went to recently, but forgot to link to it. But here it is now. I finally got around to watching Ciao! Manhattan today and it was as weird as you'd expect. In case you haven't heard about the movie it's pretty much the life story of Edie Sedgwick played by herself (which is why it was billed as "the film that wrote itself"). It's a mix of Edie being strung out and rambling at her Mom's house and scenes from Andy Warhol's Factory. In my opinion you really have to be a fan of Edie's to get anything from this movie and therefore the most interesting bits for me was the bonus materiale, which featured an interview with the late George Plimpton and some outtakes. The movie actually features some interesting people and besides the Warhol crowd you also see Allen Ginsberg, Roger Vadim, and Uma Thurman's parents. I pretty much work and blog all the time, but this Thursday I took time out to get all domestic and actually bake stuff. I'm not much of a chef, but all that kitchen work I've been doing has inspired me to try and make something myself. Besides when you have someone to cook for it's always a bit more interesting than just cooking for yourself. The same evening I saw Punch Drunk Love, which is a strange little movie. Finally, I was very excited to see that the new Eddie Izzard show, Sexie, will be available on the 24th of November. Should be fabulous. And I still can't believe I finally have a degree.
